Educators gathered at the Bacon Theatre for the TEFLIS 2023 Conference to share insights and strategies for enhancing language education in the UK.
In a remarkable display of commitment to language education, educators from various UK schools came together for a conference focused on teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). The event, held at Dean Close School's Bacon Theatre, provided a platform for English Language and EAL teachers, as well as experts in the field of TEFL to share insights, exchange ideas, and collaborate on strategies to enhance language learning experiences for pupils.
The conference was a testament to the importance of equipping pupils with strong language and literacy skills, particularly in the context of an increasingly interconnected and globalized world. Participants from different educational institutions immersed themselves in discussions and workshops aimed at improving classroom teaching methods, incorporating innovative AI technologies, and fostering a culture where the value of diversity, multilingualism and cross-cultural understanding can be fully embedded in our school communities.
Organisers expressed deep gratitude to the attendees for their active participation and commitment to advancing language education in the UK. The dedication and passion demonstrated by educators highlighted the collective effort to empower students with the invaluable tool of language proficiency to support and extend their academic performance at GCSE, A Level and beyond.
Throughout the conference, educators shared their experiences, best practices, and success stories. The exchange of knowledge and expertise, supported by speakers from the Oxford Brookes University, the University of Bath and the British Council, fostered a collaborative spirit, inspiring attendees to explore new approaches and adapt their teaching methods to meet the evolving needs of students learning English as a foreign language. A particular highlight for participants was a session led on Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity: Unconscious Bias vs. Conscious Inclusivity by Housemistress Kate Milne with a panel of DCS pupils representing a range of cultures and languages.
As the conference drew to a close, participants left with renewed energy and a wealth of ideas to implement within their respective schools. The annual event serves as a catalyst for ongoing professional development, providing educators with the necessary tools to create engaging language learning environments that promote communication, cultural awareness, and global citizenship.
