> FACT 2:  Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson, two successful England football managers, both managed in Ipswich Town FC! The club became Football League Champions in 1961, before beating Arsenal in 1978 to win the FA Cup. Robson made a big difference to the club, and during his 13 years as manager, Ipswich Town claimed the UEFA Cup 1981!

> FACT 3:  If you visit the St Lawrence Church, you can find the oldest circle of church bells in the world! They were cast in the 15th century and are locally known ad Wolsey’s bells as he would have heard the exact same bells chime all the way back in the 1500s. 

> FACT 4:  Charles Dickens was also a fan of Ipswich. Visiting several times, he settled there to write The Pickwick Papers in 1836. If you walk around the town you’ll most likely notice the landmarks that feature in his book, including the central sights of the Great White Horse Hotel and St Clement's Parish. 

> FACT 5:  King Henry VIII’s confidant, Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, was born in Ipswich in 1475. Cardinal Wolsey grew up in the town before moving to study at Magdalen College, Oxford. 

> FACT 6:  The Willis Building, a striking piece of architecture designed by Norman Foster and Wendy Cheesman in 1970, was the UK’s youngest Grade I listed building until 2011. The building is beautifully modern and includes an impressive range of innovative amenities such as a swimming pool, a roof-top restaurant and a garden.  

> FACT 7:  Eliza Acton, famed for her invention of the modern genre of cookery writing, was born and raised in Ipswich. Acton practised her delicious recipes at her family home in Ipswich before publishing “Modern Cookery for Private Families” in 1845. The book remains an absolute staple in the household for any cook, with Delia Smith describing Acton as “the best writer of recipes in the English Language”. 

> FACT 8: Thomas Gainsborough, a renowned portrait artist was born in the nearby town of Sudbury. He moved to Ipswich around 1740 with his wife, Margaret Burr and earned his living through his portraiture, with his most famous works being ‘The Blue Boy’ and ‘Mr and Mrs Andrews’. However he did create a beautiful panoramic landscape of Holywell Park which depicts the intriguing shape of the ponds. 

> FACT 9:  Ransomes and Rapier, an Ipswich engineering company, constructed the first railway in China! It ran through the city of Shanghai and was named Woosung Road after it opened in 1876. 

> FACT 10:  Ipswich is where the first powered lawn mower was first sold! It was produced in 1902 by Ransomes, Simes and Jefferies who also produced ploughs, combine harvesters and other tilling equipment throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
