Merchiston Received Green Flag Award

Published by Merchiston Castle School on Thursday 9th of January 2025

In a continued effort to look after our environment and find ways to play our part in tacking climate change, our Sustainability Committee is delighted to announce that Merchiston has been awarded the Eco-School’s Green Flag Award.

This is an incredible achievement – in particular as the boys managed to plan and achieve this in only 1 Term! Reaching this goal was the result of a huge amount of hard work which included the creation of an Eco Code, litter pick-up sessions, compost creating, weed clearing as well as a full audit of our recycling system at the School.

For some of the boys, all activities ran as part of this Green Flag project also represent one of the fundamental components of their Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award.

The physical green flag, of Green Flag Award fame, has been presented to the School this week and the boys in the Sustainability Commission have taken the decision that the Flag should be displayed at The Forest at Merchiston, to represent the connection between the work carried out in the Senior School and the ethos of the Forest, as our Junior proposition.

Yesterday, the boys presented the flag to Forest pupils and shared with them their journey towards achieving this award – there were many suggestions brought to the Commission by our youngest pupils about things we can all do to play our part is saving this beautiful planet of ours!
