Known for their top-quality craftsmanship and dedication to excellence, the Steinway name is a dream for pianists everywhere.
For Year 12 student Exyn, originally from Guangzhou, China, being named a Steinway Scholar is more than an award—it’s a sign of her hard work, passion, and dedication to music. We had the chance to chat with Exyn about her journey to becoming a Steinway Scholar, the challenges she’s faced, and the moments that have shaped her love for music.
What drew you to the piano, and how has it shaped your musical journey so far?
“The piano caught my attention when I was very young. I still remember the first time I saw someone playing one when I was five years old. My mum took me to a gallery, and there was a grand piano. I stood in front of it, amazed, and thought, ‘This is so cool.’ From that moment, I knew I wanted to learn how to play.
“When I started, it wasn’t always easy. I struggled to sit still on the bench for long and would cry when my mum or teacher asked me to practise. But as I got older, I started to understand the stories and feelings behind each piece, and it became so interesting. Over time, I didn’t need anyone to tell me to practise—I wanted to do it myself.
“Learning the piano has taught me discipline, creativity, and how to express my emotions. It’s played a big part in shaping who I am.”
What does receiving a Steinway Scholarship mean to you, and how will it help you achieve your goals?
“Receiving the Steinway Scholarship is an amazing honour. It’s more than just an award; it’s recognition of my hard work and love for music. There were times when I felt stressed and even thought about giving up on my diploma, but this scholarship has given me the encouragement to keep going. It reminds me that all the effort I’ve put in has been worth it.
“The scholarship motivates me to aim higher and achieve more in my musical journey. It’s a great support that pushes me to keep improving.”
