St Nicholas' School in Fleet recently hosted a thrilling STEAM Week, inspiring pupils across all age groups with a dynamic programme of activities celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. The week was packed with hands-on workshops, exciting experiments, and engaging trips, offering pupils a unique opportunity to explore the wonders of STEAM subjects. One of the standout events was the Inter-School Science Challenge, which welcomed pupils from All Saints Junior School in Fleet, Elvetham Heath Primary School, South Farnham School, and Velmead Junior School. Young scientists teamed up to tackle fascinating chemical reactions, including the explosive Screaming Jelly Baby experiment, the foamy eruption of Elephant’s Toothpaste, and a fiery Thermite reaction. The children then unleashed their creativity by designing and erupting their very own model volcanoes, making for an electrifying and educational morning.
Dr. Olwen Wright, Headmistress of St Nicholas’ School, praised the event, commenting:
“STEAM Week has been a phenomenal success, providing our pupils with hands-on experiences that ignite curiosity and innovation. We were particularly delighted to welcome children from several local primary schools to share in the excitement, strengthening our commitment to collaborative learning and inspiring the next generation of scientists, engineers, and artists.”
The week featured a wide array of immersive activities. Infants had an interactive animal encounter, meeting scorpions, tarantulas, and giant snails before taking on an exciting ‘Egg Drop Challenge.’ Years 3 and 4 unleashed their creativity in a percussion workshop, crafting instruments and performing together. Junior School pupils participated in a Lego Robotics Workshop, designing and programming fairground rides. Year 7 pupils engineered air-powered cars and explored wartime codebreaking at Bletchley Park. Years 7 to 9 created a striking painted periodic table based on microscopic structures. Year 9 tackled a bridge-building challenge, while Year 10 pupils explored engineering through Virtual Reality simulations. Finally, Year 10 and 11 GCSE Science students attended Science Live at the Apollo Victoria, gaining inspiration from leading scientists.
STEAM Week at St Nicholas’ School was a resounding success, reinforcing the school’s commitment to fostering creativity, collaboration, and innovation.
