Leading Birmingham Prep School Announces Exciting Expansion to Educate Children Through to Year 11

Published by Hallfield School on Wednesday 15th of January 2025

Hallfield School, a leading independent prep school in Edgbaston, is thrilled to announce its expansion to provide education through to Year 11, offering families a seamless and exceptional academic journey in a nurturing, co-educational environment.

From 2026, Hallfield will welcome its first Year 9 cohort, followed by Year 10 in 2027 and Year 11 in 2028. This expansion meets growing parental demand for an academically selective school that combines small class sizes, first-class facilities, and a personalised approach to education. It also fills a gap in the Birmingham market for families seeking a smaller, supportive senior school option.

Hallfield: Building on a legacy of academic excellence

Founded in 1879, Hallfield has a proud history of preparing pupils for highly competitive senior independent and grammar schools at Year 6. For many families, Hallfield will continue to deliver its exceptional 11 preparation, ensuring pupils are offered places at highly selective local independent and state schools.

The success of Hallfield’s Year 7 and 8 middle school model, launched in 2020, has proven the value of extending prep school education. It has allowed pupils to flourish without the pressures of the 11 entrance exams, providing time for academic and personal growth. Over the past four years, Year 7 and 8 has supported numerous children in achieving outstanding outcomes, cementing Hallfield’s reputation for academic rigour and holistic development. Pupils leaving at 13 have secured places at some of the UK’s most distinguished schools, including Eton College, King Edward’s, Bromsgrove, and Rugby School.

A thoughtful, gradual expansion

This next step—adding Years 9, 10, and 11—will enhance Hallfield’s offering without compromising the school’s core mission or reputation for excellence. Head Master Keith Morrow explains:

“Our expansion to Year 11 provides an exciting option for families who feel their child would thrive in a smaller, nurturing environment that still delivers outstanding academic results. While this expansion broadens Hallfield’s horizons, our focus on preparing children for 11 success remains central to what we offer.”

To ensure continuity of quality and care, Hallfield’s initial growth will be limited to three forms (45 pupils in total) across Years 9, 10, and 11. Should demand increase, additional capacity will be introduced gradually, maintaining the school’s hallmark of small class sizes and exceptional teaching standards.

Committed to the future, without compromise

Hallfield’s expansion ensures that families can enjoy greater choice and flexibility, while younger pupils continue to benefit from the outstanding 11 preparation and academic foundation that has been the school’s hallmark for generations.
