Black History Month at Chigwell School

Published by Chigwell School on Wednesday 30th of October 2024

Black History Month at Chigwell School was launched with an all-school assembly where Tristan (Year 12) discussed the theme of 'Reclaiming Narratives' and shared some incredible stories of extraordinary figures who have reclaimed their narratives throughout history such as Mary Seacole and Claudia Jones.

There have been lots of activities taking place , including a treasure hunt, form activities, dance workshops for the Prep School, reading lists and displays in the libraries and special lunches prepared by Chartwells.

Throughout Black History Month, the Equality Ambassadors have worked to organise several activities with the Prep School and Pre Prep, to encourage the school’s younger children to learn about and feel more involved with this celebration of diversity. They have put on story-times with pupils from both parts of the school and read books by Black authors or with Black protagonists, along with retellings of traditional African stories. As well as this, a dance workshop led by our Equality Ambassadors was put on for Years 3-6, in which pupils were taught choreography to an Afrobeats song, and multiple assemblies were held.

'We hope that these activities help the children to better understand the value of commemorating our different cultures and backgrounds.' - Isabella, Year 11
