Lord Wandsworth College Celebrates Best-Ever A-Level Results

Published by Lord Wandsworth College on Thursday 15th of August 2024

Our educational philosophy at LWC is pretty simple.

If you put inspirational teachers in front of happy pupils, surround them with great spaces, and create a culture of people wanting to learn, pupils and staff flourish. This magical quartet has been building over many years now at LWC, and this A-level group has broken all records at a time when the education system needs a significant reboot. And turning the computer on and off may well not help.

These wonderful pupils head into the world with a passport for future success and experiences that will last a lifetime.

Our mission at LWC (and, in fact, for the wider education system) is to widen the worlds of all in our community by being inspiring, characterful and expansive in our outlook. We do not believe there is a fixed path, even though the education system is trying to force us all that way. There are many routes to explore, and way will inevitably lead on to way, to almost quote Robert Frost.

Numbers are, but one metric and there were many excellent stories, with over 52 % of results being grades A*-A, nearly 77% A*-B and a pass rate of 100%. The year group further achieved 100% of A* and A grades in their Extended Project Qualification as they took and applied their subject knowledge to university degree level. They are LWC’s best ever results. More importantly, our pupils are leaving with a passion for learning and a can-do, will-do approach to life.

Headmaster, Adam Williams, said, “In a world that is increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, let’s surf those waves of uncertainty and seize the unseeable. Granted, an environment with over £25 m of educational investment has helped, alongside record numbers of applicants - demand and partnerships with the wider sector has also helped. So, let’s celebrate those exceptional journeys which have led to the results of teenagers across the land and help them find ways to be brave and step off the well-trodden path. For future success lies in those who embrace difference and explore new angles. Those who love to zig whilst all others zag, will lead the way. Amen to that.”

On an individual level, huge congratulations, in particular, go to Ned Banks, Dorian Turner, Oliver Cameron, Garrett Irvine-Smith, George Morris and Xander Finn who achieved a remarkable 3A*s, as well as Ella Freer, Amelia Ralls and Oscar Bailey who scored 2A*s and an A grade.

LWC pupils are flourishing in subjects which require collaboration and innovation, and having the courage to learn in the margins, not simply what is required to be taught. As the national exam landscape seems to narrow ever further, our pupils continue to keep their choices broad, interconnected and curious - essential 21st-century skills to embrace. They continue to be supported by inspirational teachers, too, who constantly strive for new and innovative ways to deliver the joy of their subjects.

This school is thriving, thanks to the culture set by pupils and staff alike.
