Beacon Boys in Years 7 and 8 were thrilled to be given the opportunity to travel to South Africa for an exhilarating Cricket Tour. The team departed The Beacon School in leafy Amersham, Buckinghamshire, to embark upon their journey to South Africa with enthusiasm, led by Mr Mike Williams (Head of PE). On arrival, the team commenced training and got accustomed to beautiful Stellenbosch before kicking off with a match against Leading Edge; a charity team aimed at supporting disadvantaged children through cricket and education. Despite a defeat for The Beacon, who were skittled out for 73 runs in 20 overs, the match was very much enjoyed by all, and the exchange of kit was a particular highlight. The following day saw a 30 over match against Somerset College. The Beacon faced another loss but by a respectable 50 runs. Off the field, the boys immersed themselves in South Africa's culture and wildlife, visiting iconic places like the Newlands Cricket Stadium, Robben Island, a Cheetah Sanctuary and going on a memorable safari. They experienced some awe-inspiring encounters along the way. However, the tour encountered a setback when some of the boys fell ill during their visit to Bridge House School. Despite this, they managed to put up a respectable performance. It wasn’t long before the illness swept across the team, seeing a loss against Bishop’s. During the fifth match against Groote Schuur, The Beacon boys stepped up, showing true resilience and fortitude. A great game, filled with determination by The Beacon boys. As the tour drew to a close, the final game was set within a beautiful venue against South African College School. It bought a triumphant end to the tour with The Beacon winning by 45 runs. A fitting finish which gave justification for all the hard work and progress the young cricketers had made both before and during the tour. Gathering for a final meal at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, the boys reminisced about their memorable trip, forging lasting bonds and friendships. Despite encountering some stomach troubles along the way, the tour left indelible memories and a piece of South Africa in their hearts. The Beacon is an inspiring Independent Prep School and Nursery for boys aged 3 to 13 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. Visit their website, beaconschool.co.uk for information about The Beacon.
