Brentwood School’s Fencing Department Had A Fantastic Three Days At The Public Schools’ Fencing Championships 2024

Published by Brentwood School on Monday 25th of March 2024

Sterling performances by all team members resulted with Brentwood placing second overall to Millfield, whilst also placing second in the Boys’ Competition to Whitgift.

A number of individual successes showcased Brentwood fencers as true all-rounders, highlighting their prowess across multiple weapons. Joshua E and Jacob L (both Upper Sixth) came third and Calum A (also Upper Sixth) came second in the Senior Boys’ Master at Arms, which is awarded to the Fencers who are best over three weapons.

Mirabelle B (Lower Sixth) came third and Chloe L (also Lower Sixth) came second in the Girls’ Senior Champion at Arms, whilst Ava F (Year 9) placed third in the Mount-Haes Girls’ Champion at Arms. Max Y (Year 8) won the Trophy for Boys’ Mount-Haes Master at Arms - the win made extra special because the category trophy was presented by Brentwood School in 2004.

Brentwood School Master i/c Fencing, Christiaan Galesloot, said: “The Mount-Haes is a small sword replica of Sting from Frodo/Lord of the Rings and it is particularly impressive for someone of Year 8 to win the trophy for overall boys’ champion Years 7,8 & 9."

”Other individual highlights included Jacob L and Callum A securing a quarter-final place in Senior Boys’ Foil, and another quarter-final spot for Max Y in Mount-Haes Foil. Chloe L also finished last 8 in Girls’ Senior Sabre and Ava F (Year 9) came 3rd in Girls’ Mount-Haes Sabre.

Mr Galesloot said: Well done to all the students and coaches on representing the School so well in this prestigious tournament. I feel proud of the team and the group and I am very grateful to the Old Brentwood fencers who joined us as referees. We also - as is tradition - helped with clearing out the sports hall after the event.”
