Sixth Form PSCHE > Understanding Asylum

Published by Woodhouse Grove on Tuesday 20th of February 2024

This week, here at The Grove we had the wonderful opportunity to engage with the School of Sanctuary initiative, which aims to provide a welcoming environment for individuals seeking sanctuary. Rose McCarthy from Horsforth Town of Sanctuary and Horsforth Chaplaincy Project, along with asylum seekers Noori from Afghanistan, Nelson from Cameroon, and Mohammed from Yemen, shared their experiences with the students. Through presentations and discussions, they shed light on the challenges faced by asylum seekers and aimed to break down any negative stereotypes associated with their plight.

It is heartening to see our school community actively supporting asylum seekers through initiatives like the ‘Bring your Boots’ collection for a Drop-in centre in Leeds. By collecting over 100 pairs of rugby and football boots for those in need, our pupils and parents demonstrated compassion and solidarity towards individuals who are rebuilding their lives in a new environment. The stories shared by Rose, Noori, Nelson, and Mohammed serve as powerful reminders of the resilience and courage displayed by asylum seekers in the face of adversity.

As students in Year 12 and 13 reflect on the experiences shared, it is hoped that they will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by asylum seekers and develop empathy towards those seeking refuge. By listening to their stories, our aim is to foster a more inclusive and compassionate environment for all. Thank you to Rose, Noori, Nelson, and Mohammed for sharing their stories and enriching the educational experience of the students here at The Grove.
