Kenya Expedition

Published by The Grange School on Thursday 20th of July 2023

Our internet connection isn’t great but everyone is well and happy in Kenya! We’ve been learning from the anti-poaching team, working with their sniffer dogs and have seen zebra and jackals already. Internet coverage likely to be worse for next few days sorry, will do my best

We’re enjoying a day of camel trekking. We’ve seen zebra, giraffe, oryx, gazelle, an ostrich and some elephant poo so far.

Today we walked 7.7km further into the ranch with our camel train. Things we saw: Grevy’s zebra

We’ve arrived at camp 3 - it’s amazing! Right next to a lake; we’re sat eating lunch watching elephants.

Day 8: Mount Longonot This morning we had a 5am start to climb Mount Longonot. On the way up we saw zebra, giraffe and buffalo. We got an impressive view of the Rift Valley.

Mr Taylor gave our future Alevel Biologists a talk on the process of succession at the top of Mount Longonot.

This morning we’re out on Lake Naivasha learning about this aquatic ecosystem - trying to spot hippos, sea eagles and fish.Tonight we’ve been treated to a delicious Kenyan meal thanks to our cooks Andrew and Peter.

Final sunrise over Lake Naivasha. We’re currently packing up our tents and bags before breakfast. Next stop is the Masai Mara where we’re having a talk this evening from a Masai tribesman about the ecosystem we’ll be entering. This evening we’ve been joined by Emanuel, a Maasai tribesman. He spoke to the group about Maasai culture and we asked lots of questions.

Saying a final goodbye to Moses. We’ve left him with a bunch of medial supplies, pencils, and other bits and he’s going to take them to a local children’s home.

Home sweet home. What an amazing experience we’ve had; it’s been great to see the independence, resilience and team work skills of our Kenya family develop over the last two weeks. Huge thank you to Mr Taylor for organising the trip.
