Pupil Wins Junior Speed Climbing Championship

Published by Edgbaston High School for Girls on Friday 15th of September 2023

A Year 11 EHS pupil has clinched the title of British Junior Speed Climbing champion. After an eight-month hiatus from the sport due to a stress fracture, Star made her return at the British Speed Championships held at the prestigious Edinburgh International Climbing Arena last weekend.

As the only junior girl to meet the qualification standards, Star competed as a senior athlete against seasoned Team GB climbers. Despite the daunting competition, she managed to secure an impressive 4th place finish overall and also claimed the coveted British Junior Title.

Climbing has grown in prominence, recently gaining recognition as an Olympic sport. Star's journey into the world of climbing began at the age of eight when she celebrated her birthday with a climbing party. Her initial foray into the sport included learning bouldering and lead climbing, but it was only two years ago that she discovered her true passion: speed climbing. This discipline of speed climbing involves a thrilling head-to-head race up an identical route, with climbers striving to reach the summit first.

Star now sets her sights on the upcoming Scottish Youth Championship in June.

We send our congratulations to Star and eagerly anticipate what this talented young athlete will accomplish in the future.
