On Wednesday 25th January 2023, for the first time ever, Abbotsholme School created a girls' football team and competed in a football match against Derby High School, winning 4-0. Sophie Duckmanton scored an amazing hatrick, with two of them going into the top corners, and Maisie Allsop scored the last one, with 2 minutes left of the game.
When asking Miya West her opinions on the game she responded with: “All in all, for our first game, I think it was a very positive one. The girls adapted to the 9-aside pitch well from the sports hall. The whole team worked well together. As well as getting player of the match, Matilda worked very well in goal and out.”
From speaking to a few players, it sounded like the game went very well for the young side. Billy Taylor and Erin Colquhoun both weren’t very eager to play in this fixture, but by the end of the game, they both didn’t want to stop and just wanted to carry on instead. Both - Malisha Tennakoon and Annie Shuttlewood, stated that their favourite goal was the first one by Sophie. Malisha described the goal as: “she tactically placed the ball over the keeper’s head to put the team 1-0 up.”
