LWC Named In The Top 100 Schools For Cricket

The UK's best schools for cricket have been revealed in The Cricketer's Schools Guide 2024 and we are delighted to have been recognised in the list for the 8th year running. This year's guide features the top 100 senior, top 50 prep/junior and top 20 all-girls schools for cricket in 2024's successful roll call of schools – including both state-funded and private establishments. This prestigious list was finalised after an exhaustive selection process that saw a huge number submit entries for inclusion in the guide. All entries were then judged against an extensive set of criteria, which included a compelling commitment to cricket in the curriculum, facilities, fixture programmes and coaching. The Cricketer gathered entries and compiled the leading lists, consulting former England star Lydia Greenway and her coaching initiative Cricket For Girls, to select the top 20 all-girls schools. The Cricketer magazine editor Huw Turbervill said: "Our 2024 Schools Guide celebrates the best cricket programmes in state and independent schools across the country. The rise of women’s cricket in schools really has been a joy to behold. It is a pleasure to read the write-ups.” Here at Lord Wandsworth College, our cricketing alumni continue to increase in number, including Gemma Lane (Western Storm) and Finty Trussler (Southern Vipers). Gemma was signed by Western Storm and made her debut in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy over the summer. There are a considerable number of pupils playing at county and regional level too, including Sixth Former Bella Mitchell as part of Southern Vipers Elite Player Pathway, Sam Ruffell (Hampshire) and Kira Engel (Berkshire). In particular, our girls’ cricket has grown exponentially over the last 5 years, with major investment into our cricket facilities and coaching, including the construction of two superb new grounds with training facilities. Furthermore, the recent appointment of Level 4 coach, Steve Williams, as our new Head of Cricket marks an exciting time in our history, as our pupils continue to thrive in this fantastic sport. Beyond LWC, The College has also entered into a pilot partnership with local secondary, primary schools, cricket clubs and Hampshire cricket to raise the profile of the game and the coaching level in the region, something we are hugely excited about.
