St Edmund’s College Staff And Students Wear Red To ‘Show Racism The Red Card’

Students and staff wore red today (Friday 20 October 2023) to show their support for ‘Wear Red Day’ - an initiative organised by anti-racism charity, ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ (SRtRC), which helps to educate young people and adults to challenge racism in society and celebrate diversity.

Helping to spread the message that racism is not acceptable, students and staff members at St Edmund’s added red accessories to their uniform. Some donned red headbands, whilst others sported a red hat or red socks to show their support.

‘Wear Red Day’ is a national day of action that helps raise awareness around the issue of racism. It also generates money to help fund anti-racism education for young people and adults across the UK. ‘Wear Red Day’ rounds off a focus at St Edmund’s this month on inclusion and celebrating Black History Month. For World Inclusion Day, a group of St Edmund’s students stepped into the role of educators and taught sign language to their fellow students and staff. Other activities have included student-led assemblies, PHSE lessons, poetry and Inter-House art competitions.

Matthew Mostyn, Headmaster at St Edmund’s College, said:

“A huge thank you to everyone who took part in ‘Wear Red Day’ and showed their support for stamping out racism from our society. At St Edmund’s we have a zero tolerance approach to any discriminatory behaviour and a day like today helps to reinforce our stand on this.”

Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s largest anti-racism educational charity and was founded in January 1996 - thanks in part to a donation by then Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop. Last year over 440,000 individuals registered to celebrate ‘Wear Red Day’.
