Last Wednesday, the winners of the East Wales Premier League ( Christ College 1st XV) and the winners of the West Wales Premier League ( Ysgol Ystalyfera) met at The Wern, Merthyr Tydfil RFC to determine the best Welsh school boy rugby team.
This encounter saw the two teams meet in the 15 man game for the 3rd time in 2 years. There was certainly a revengeful feeling in the air as Christ College went into the game to regain some pride after previous cup losses against one of their toughest opponents ,over the last two seasons.
The game started off with a fast but cagey feel to it, with both teams going hammer and tong at each other. It was a physical game with some big carries and some thumping tackles.
The game was opened with continued pressure from CCB, with a slicing line straight through the middle of the Ystalyfera defence. Ystalyfera struck back with a converted try of their own to bring the score 7-7. From this point CCB went on to score another 3 converted tries. The half time score was 28-7.
The second half opened as the first did, with Christ College piling on the pressure and scoring first. Again Ystalyfera hit back to bring the score to 33-14. The continued playing style kept causing Ystalyfera problems and the tries were mounting up.
Notable performances came from Brad Aven and Gethin O’Callaghan, who both picked up a hatrick of tries and Lewis Howells bagging a double. Other scorers were Rhys Pearson and Dylan Skyrme, with Jack Perrins adding 5 conversions.
This was a brilliant performance to end what has been an outstanding season of rugby for CCB.
Final Score : Christ College Brecon : 60 Ysgol Ystalyfera : 14
