Last week, three teams of Kingswood students set off to compete in the F1 in Schools regional championships in Bristol. Two teams in Year 9 teams competed in the entry class event and one Sixth Form team competed in the professional class. The groups were required to compete in a number of ways, including: designing and making a model F1 car; producing an informative pit display and portfolio of how they have developed as a team; and two interviews with a panel of industry experts.Despite strong competition from a number of teams, it was fantastic that the Kingswood teams came away with four awards. The ‘Fastest Car in Class’ award was won by team ‘Sizzle’ consisting of Alice, Swasi and Harriet.
The Senior School team were: Stan, Marco, Rufus, Ben and Jack, who won ‘Best Engineered Car’, ‘Best Team Brand’ and, the ultimate prize of Southwest Champions. Stan, the team captain, reflects on their achievement “The Regional Finals were a fantastic display of the hard work we all put in as a team” said team captain, Stan. “Everyone gave it their all and it was very special to have our work recognised. It was so exciting to finally see our car shooting down the track at speeds up to 65kph. We have learnt so much from this experience so we can be as competitive as possible for Nationals in June.”
The Finals in June takes place in Leeds where they will be competing for a place in the World Finals later this year in Singapore. A truly fantastic achievement from all involved.
