We'll Meet Again...

Published by St Margaret's Preparatory School, Calne on Tuesday 6th of December 2022

As part of their studies about World War II, last week Year 6 visited Steam - The Museum of the Great Western Railway. Alice and Georgie share their report of the day.

This term, we are learning about World War II. So, on Friday 23rd September, the whole of Year 6 went on an amazing trip to Steam Museum, Swindon. We learnt so much, it was really interesting to see all of the super trains and learn about what it was like for families living throughout World War II.

The adventure began when we first stepped into the historical museum, and instantly we knew we were going to have a great day! Our first activity was acting out the events of one of the families who lived through the war. It was amusing to watch our peers create the story which was being told. It was based on a lady named Betty, who’s family, like many, took on important roles to help Britain.

Just before lunch, we took part in a role play of being evacuated, and we learnt what life was like as an evacuee. This involved being lucky enough to look through some of the children’s suitcases and learning about what they needed to take with them to the countryside. This was followed by being ‘evacuated’- which led to the disappointment of not being picked up by our ‘future’ guardians!

After a quick but delicious lunch, we were ready to begin our tour of the museum, which was one of our highlights. We enjoyed the tour most of all because we found it fascinating to wander around the museum and look at all the artefacts. We even had the opportunity to walk under a steam train and admire the mechanical side of it all.

Overall, it was a terrific trip and we will certainly remember the facts we learnt.

We are so glad we were able to go on the trip and share it with you!
