Canford Earthshot Prize – winners announced!
Published by Canford School on Friday 26th of November 2021
Thank you to all the Year 5 and 6 pupils who took part in our inaugural Canford Earthshot Prize competition. We are now delighted to announce the winners! The Earthshot Prize was launched by the Duke of Cambridge and The Royal Foundation in October 2020 and the first winners were presented with their awards at a ceremony in London in October 2021. It is centred around five ‘Earthshots’ – Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Fix Our Climate and Build a Waste-Free World, selected as simple and ambitious goals for our planet which if achieved by 2030 will improve life for us all, for generations to come. More information can be found at https://earthshotprize.org/
Canford’s own version of the competition asked pupils to select one of the five Earthshots and explain why they thought this category should win. You could present your entry in a report, through a drawing, a model, a poster or a short film. Head of Geography Mrs Alex Boulton found the judging very difficult but eventually decided on the following winners:
Year 5 – joint winners
Alfie – Elstree School
Rehaan – Eaton House School
Year 6 winner
Charlie – Yarrells School
Year 6 runner up
Nicholas – Chafyn Grove School
Alex commented:
“The new Earthshot Prize is such a pioneering initiative. We have been working on elements of it through our Geography lessons at Canford, and I wanted to extend it through to junior pupils through a similar competition. I was very impressed with the standard of entries from a variety of different prep schools, and clearly pupils of all ages are so passionate about the issues of climate change and preserving our planet which is wonderful to see. Many congratulations to all those who submitted entries, and to our winners.”
