CV Certificates At the end of last term High Education & Careers ran a Job application competition in conjunction with the Upper Fifth Tutors. The aim of the competition was to write a CV and covering letter as an application for one of six work opportunities: • GlaxoSmithKline – Work experience • Gordonstoun International Summer School – Student leader • Sky News – Journalism Apprenticeship • Close Brothers – Merchant Banking School Leaver Scheme • Crown Digital – Graphic Design Apprenticeship • Pupil’s own Choice Pupils had one week to submit their applications. All of the ‘jobs’ were aimed at 17-18 year old students and specified suitable ‘skills’ (rather than academic ability). The department had a record number of submissions this year and all have now been judged and each entrant has received individual feedback. Some quotations from the covering letters include: ‘I want to work in the financial services industry because of my passion for lateral thinking and number solving. I am a confident leader and also a strong team player who is able to build good working relationships….’ Close Brothers ‘I feel that I am particularly suited for this work experience opportunity as along with my fervent interest in science and healthcare, I am also a notable team worker, creative and critical thinker and a confident, precise communicator.’ GalxoSmithKline ‘I have a real interest in current affairs – regularly reading the newspapers…….. In addition, I frequently write columns for my school newsletter, whether it be recent debates or recognising the personal achievements of my fellow school friends….’ Journalism Apprenticeship ‘I can offer you confidence and creativity in addition to working well with other team members. I would love to build on my skills and enhance my portfolio of designs….’ Crown Digital ‘As a student leader I would place great importance in ensuring that all students in the camp feel included and enjoy taking part in activities. I would encourage and motivate my student group. I feel my leadership skills as Head Girl…… and having captained teams on the hockey pitch will help me to unite my team and create an inclusive atmosphere.’ Student Leader Dr Allcock, Head of Higher Education & Careers commented: "We were very impressed by the quality and once again it has been really difficult to select the winners. The winners were announced in assembly and on this occasion received a certificate and chocolates, rather than a job! In addition to the winners there were a high number of pupils who were highly commended for either their CV or covering letter. Congratulations to everyone for their hard work."
