St Benedict's is delighted to extend its congratulations to its Head of the Extended Project Qualification, Doctor Julie Greenhough, on the award earlier this month of her Doctorate in Education. Dr Greenhough, who has been carrying out her doctoral studies over the past six years whilst working full-time, said that she was over the moon at finally finishing. 'It hasn't quite sunk in yet,' she said, 'I am still a little giddy with the excitement of it all.'Dr Greenhough studied at the Institute of Education, part of the University of London. Her research was in multimodal theories of teaching and learning; how students show their knowledge and understanding in online environments and she has added to social semiotic theory. One of the unique contributions of her thesis was the fact that her research was practitioner based and centred on Key Stage 4 students. 'Given the high-risk nature of GCSEs there is little opportunity to conduct long term research with exam classes. I am grateful to the Head for his trust and support in enabling me to do this.'
As a holder of the Investors in People Gold Award St Benedict's School is committed to supporting its staff to develop academically. Mr Hull, Director of Professional Development, oversees an extensive training programme with various opportunities for staff to progress in their careers.
So, what next for Dr Greenhough? There is a book deal to begin work on in the summer and academic papers to write. For now though, she is enjoying a well-earned break from studying and writing and is ploughing her way through her reading 'wish-list'!
