Denstone College, close to the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border, combines the traditional elements of public school education with a modern outlook. Small classes and personal tutors allow for extensive academic and pastoral attention, enabling staff to focus on the development of individual potential in each child.
Boarding at Denstone is particularly successful because of the structure which enables our boarders to enjoy an atmosphere appropriate to their needs with our lowers, middles, and seniors living in their own areas of the boarding community.
Life in the South House is characterised by close support, understanding and the freedom to have fun. The South House students are offered a more mature environment where enjoyment is still a key factor but there is a strong focus on GCSE preparation. The North House continues this natural progression of social life and study and is an excellent bridge between school and university. . The traditional house system runs happily alongside, and house spirit and loyalty is very strong in music, drama and sport.
The College's sporting and musical record is the envy of many, and this, alongside a full programme of activities including dance, Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, golf, watersports, cookery, and a growing number of minority sports, has no doubt contributed to the College being at its fullest for many years. At the time of writing, the College has 595 pupils.
In recent years the College has benefited from a £10m development programme, with a new Music School and additional classrooms opened in September 2010. Further extensive classroom facilities and the Adamson's sports complex were completed and opened in June 2012. Then in September 2013, the doors opened to a beautiful library which is at the heart of teaching and learning at Denstone. In addition, a brand new classroom block, housing Maths and Modern Foreign Languages opened in June 2017. The day and boarding accommodation undergo regular improvement and redecoration, and impressive language and IT teaching facilities have been developed, along with general classroom refurbishments to a high standard. A large sports hall allows for a wide range of minority and unusual sports. Other recent improvements include a second astroturf and all weather cricket facilities.
Achievement, confidence and happiness in pupils are central to the College philosophy - we provide a rounded education with many opportunities for every child.
Open Days are held during the Summer and Michaelmas Terms, with individual visits arranged on request throughout the year. For further details, or simply to visit the College, contact the Admissions Team on 01889 591415.
