Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

What Is An EPQ?

An Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is an A level standard qualification offered by AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC, which allows students to embark on a self-directed and self-motivated project. Students choose a topic then plan, research and develop their idea and decide on their finished product.

Creativity and curiosity is encouraged. A project topic may be directly related to a student's main study programme but should look beyond the specification.

Examples Of An Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

A finished product may take the form of:

  • A research based written report
  • A production* (eg charity event, fashion show or sports event etc)
  • An artefact* (eg piece of art, a computer game or realised design)
  • A website or programme
  • A short film

*A written report must accompany these options.

Students must also record their project process in their Production Log. The process of recording and completing a project is as important as the finished product. Both the Production Log and Product will be assessed.Your school or college will need to be registered to enter EPQ’s and will need to register you on the course.

You will be offered about 30 guided learning hours by your school or college, focusing on research, project management and other relevant skills. Your project will be assessed by your tutor at the end of the course before submitting for grading.

Why Should I Take An EPQ?

EPQ's will be awarded UCAS points, so they can help with University applications.  For over-subscribed university courses, EPQ's can be a very good way to prove your passion for your field of research. Choosing a project that is in some way connected with a potential university course can be an excellent way to set you aside from other applicants.

How Is It Graded?

An EPQ is graded A* to E and will be awarded UCAS points, decided by the grade given for your project. An A* is worth 70 UCAS points, an A 60 B 50 C 40, D 30 and E 20.
