Education in Brunei

The Brunei government places a strong emphasis on education, resulting in high standards across both public and private sectors. With a literacy rate of 98%, Brunei provides free education from kindergarten through secondary school, with optional tertiary education available. However, the state education system may not be suitable for many expatriate children. Notably, education is conducted primarily in English, reflecting Brunei's historical ties with the UK. International schools in Brunei adhere to a secular curriculum. Religious education is mandatory only for Bruneian Muslim students aged 7 to 14, typically held in the afternoons. This allows expatriate children to engage in extracurricular activities or private study during that time.

When choosing a school among the private schools, only four are considered truly international based on their curriculum, examinations, and expatriate staff. The two largest schools, Jerudong International School (JIS) and International School of Brunei (ISB), are located in the Brunei Muara District near the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan. Both schools follow the English curriculum and are accredited by reputable organizations. JIS received COBIS accreditation in 2022, and both schools are recognized for their excellent exam results.

  1. Research Ratings:
  2. Consider Location: Proximity is key. Look for schools that are close to your home to avoid long commutes. Think about whether your child will take a school bus or if you prefer a school within walking distance
  3. Evaluate Facilities: Visit schools to assess their facilities. Check if they have modern classrooms, libraries, and sports facilities that align with your child's interests
  4. Assess Teaching Standards: Look into the qualifications of the teaching staff and the school's approach to education. Strong home-school communication is essential for a positive learning environment
  5. Child Development Opportunities: Consider schools that offer extracurricular activities and programs that promote critical thinking and collaboration, which are vital for your child's overall development
  6. Academic Support: Ensure the school has academic advisors or counselors who can assist your child with course selection and future planning
  7. Visit Schools: Once you have a shortlist, schedule tours to get a feel for the environment. Pay attention to how welcoming the staff is and whether the school culture aligns with your values
  8. Review Costs: Be mindful of tuition fees and additional costs like uniforms and transportation. Make sure the school fits within your budget for the long term
  9. Seek Recommendations: Talk to other parents or expats in the area for their insights and experiences with different schools.
